Los Alcazares

Los Alcazares is situated on the beautiful Mar Menor. It's name has Arab origins " Al Kazar" meaning "Palace" or " noble House" and was a place where the Arabs would visit to enjoy a restful holiday whilst taking advantage of the mineral rich sea which has a fantastic rejuvenating
effect.

Being situated on the Mar Menor, which is a salty lagoon, in the south-east of Murcia, in Spain and also separated from the Mediterranean sea by La Manga, Los Alcazares offers a great climate. Temperatures can reach around 38-40 centigrade in July and August but is usually a little lower in the months before or after. The sea offers great respite from the heat and you will not find a shortage of chiringuitos which are dotted around the beach with tasty Tapas and refreshing cool drinks on offer. The typical murcian cuisine is comprised from produce from the “Huerta" offering rich meats and fresh fish with olives and vines supplied by the valleys. In los Alcazares you can also find quite a few restaurants catering to foreign visitors, especially near the Avenida Rio Nalon.

Getting to know Murcia will be a delight.

Murcia being the regional capital and where you will find a lot to visit whatever your interests may be. It is a university city and is situated on the river Segura. You will find it takes around 45 minutes from Los Alcazares to the city of Murcia by car and once you get there you will not fail to enjoy this city steeped in history and culture.

The Moors founded Murcia in 825AD and definitely
left there mark here. There are many old cathedrals and Museums to keep you busy and the city has many back roads where even the murcians get a little lost. Its always a good idea to bring a street map with you just in case. It is a place full of culture and character and also thrives at night with many of the youngsters treading the streets from disco to disco or bar to bar. You will find shops such as El Corte Ingles, which is of similar caliber to Selfredges and has the usual perfume and makeup sections along with fine section of women's and men's clothing.

After all that shopping you may decide to take a bite to it in Corte Ingles where the buffet has much to choose from or you may decide to visit one of the many restaurants or tapas bars dotted around the streets. The Gran via is a long stretch of main road that houses a long stream of shops that range from Hennes to Berksha. However if you venture of to the side roads there is so much more discover.

The Murcia region is a mix of old and new and has a colorful and tasteful quality to it. You can easily plan a day trip to incorporate time spent in the commercial area in the morning and then head off towards the direction of the Sierra Espuna National Park. This park is a lovely natural area where you can take walks around this park and stop and enjoy a picnic. Take in the lovely scenic views and feel refreshed and revitalized.

If you enjoy ports then Cartagena will definitely be of interest as it has a very long history and is of high importance in the military world and was a major historical commercial port of Europe .To this day you can see the worlds oldest submarine stationed there, which dates back to 1884 . Here you can see for yourself how far the history of this port dates back as you are able to visit amazing museums that guide you step by step through Cartagena's amazing history. Not to mention the option to visit the large roman ruins that were left behind.

If your looking for something a little nearer then you can take a trip to San Pedro del Pinatar or Lo pagan or Santiago de la Ribera. Santiago de la Ribera often has a summer market and all sorts of local arts and crafts can be bought there. You can also take a stroll down the sea front promenade and if you are there first thing in the morning you can take a dip in the sea and the after drying of decide to visit one of the chiringuitos offering "chocolate and churros" which are similar to our doughnuts but in long strips and dipped in chocolate sauce. You may decide to skip the swimming..hehe.

La Manga is another favorite and not only caters for the golfers amongst you with a champion golf course on offer but also for the tennis fans too. There is also a football academy where many major players have frequently come to practice inorder to prepare for a big game. Great hotel facilities are also on offer and of a very high standard. La Manga is also very popular with the Spanish who come from all over Spain and have done so frequently.

Next stop Cabo de Palos, which houses the very well known light house You will need to get your walking shoes on take a visit and look down at the great sea views. Again you will have plenty to choose from as far as food an beverages and the harbor is well known for its fantastic sea food restaurants. Some of the best fish Iv had is from this area and the freshest.

There is also a well known market in Cabo de Palos and you will have plenty to choose from, Art, clothing, fresh fruit and vegetables and kitchen supplies. Many come to Cabo de Palos for the diving as the waters are great to practice this sport and are extremely beautiful and for that reason have been conserved to the highest state. Here you will find one of the main scuba diving areas in Spain and will be able to spend a great time investigating all these waters have to offer you.

Orihuela and its Coast will take you about 45 minutes to get to from your accommodation. You will find that its a very old city and has lots of cultural history. On the way to the main town you will find much to entertain you here in and around the city. I myself have visited some of the more rural parts of this city and had some nice picnics. However its true to say that it is quite a large area and the more time you spend there the more this city will surprise you. There is a medieval center which will fill you with lots of historic information. If you decide to venture to San Miguel or Campoamor you will find many of the major golfing communities and golf courses.

You may like to venture to some of the main tourist parts such as La Zenia, where you will be enchanted with the " La Zenia Boulevard" a haven for shoppers with all the best shopping chains you could want in ne place Not forgetting Pilar de la Horadada which also boasts a fine golf course called "Lo Romero" which you can get to straight through the main town of Pilar de la Horadada which you drive along until you reach the round about with the sculpture of a golfer and then just follow the signs to the caddy master/clubhouse.

Last but not least is the great historical town of Lorca. Lorca is about 1 hour from Los Alcazares and is the largest town in Spain. Here you will have many winding streets you can choose to walk along or choose to visit at a time of fiesta. Lorca holds some of the most vibrant festivals all situated within the rich historic fabric of this town and amongst some of the oldest ruins.

Lorca castle is at the pinnacle and the collegiate Church of San Patricio and impressive town houses and mansions There is also an annual rock festival here and is one of the highlights of the year. Bands such as Iron Maiden, have chosen to play here. The food and beverage on offer well known and the Spanish enjoy hanging out until the early hours whilst ordering a variation of fresh tapas on offer. If you prefer something quieter then there are lovely tea shops and cafeterias to keep your hunger at bay and all supplying the typical Spanish cakes and Pastries. All these places can be visited easily from you bas in Los Alcazares and are just waiting for you discover their full beauty.

Accommodation in Los Alcazares is available to suit all needs as you can count on the best quality Hotels or more independently orientated apartments or chalets. As usual, due to the popularity of the area it is always advisable to book a good time in advance inorder to have maximum choice. As the town is close to the Airport, its easy to get to and from your accommodation.

For anyone wishing to hire bikes then you will have no problem locating the bike hire company and taking a trip along the cycle lanes provided by the municipality, giving a great stress free ride .

Children will enjoy the facilities surrounding the area. There are Go Karts to have fun on, along with horse and cart rides a kiddies train to show them around town and children friendly restaurants, not to mention the great fun that can be had on the beach. Many children can be seen out with their family until quite late in the evening as this is not unusual in Mediterranean countries. There are windsurfing facilities with a nautical school close by, for those keen to learn water sports on their holiday.

In the summer evenings and at the weekends the nightlife comes into its own. Many bars with music are on offer and are mostly free to get in and with reasonably priced drinks and great Latin music, to give you a real feel of the place you are staying at. The currency used here is the Euro and you will find many bargains to be discovered in the Markets and supermarkets.

Transport can be easy to access as there is a Taxi rank nearby or Autobus stops for those wishing to venture further afield and easy to access car hire companies. Many main car hire companies stationed here offer good deals and are English speaking.

Theres always time for a Party in Los Alcazares and with this brings lots of fun and cheer, fireworks and food. Its quite a regular occurrence and you'll find yourself thinking " I wonder what the celebration is this week". Many of the fiestas are to celebrate be it a religious day or national holiday or "puente" which is a long weekend of celebrations in relation to public holidays celebrated in Spain. The fist of the year kick off with the celebration if " Los Reys Magos" (which is the 3 kings)celebrated through out out Spain and through to the 6th of January when more presents are given to the children and seems to be their main present giving day depending on the family.

Then there is the yearly Carnival which is held in February along the Mar Menor. The its a very traditional carnival and his held in Aguilas which gets very busy as many people come to view the carnival at this time and see the Queen of the carnival crowned. On the 24th of March starts the Tamborada fiesta which is held in the towns of Moratalla and Mula. Easter is a very colorful time, especially in los Alcazares which has a medieval market which is truly not to be missed.

This holy week is called Semana Santa and is celebrated far and wide in Spain. Its is also richly celebrated in Murcia and many people also take advantage of the beach whilst here. The next Spring festival is the Burial of the sardine which is great fun with lots of costumes and entertainers and music and dance. They also have floats of which many toys, sweets etc are thrown to the people below. This fiesta also involves procession marches with music and a reading from the Town hall in relation to this fiesta and all it stands for.

On the 1st -5th of May there is the Festival of the Holy Cross which is held in Caravaca de la Cruz. This Festival is definitely a big one and I would recommend anyone to see it at least once in their life.

At the festival in Caravaca de la Cruz you will see the well known " race of the white horses" Run up to the high point where the church of Caravaca de la cruz is situated and if you want to get the best view then this is a good viewing point to see the speed of the horses when they arrive. The horses were used for the Vineyards and race all the way to the top of Caravaca. They look lovely and well looked after and are decorated beautifully.

As you come into the summer months then there are numerous music festival on offer. One of these is the San Javier Music festival in July. You can often find Jazz artists like Al Jarreau coming over to give us a treat and there are also many Cuban and African bands that wont fail to have you moving along to the rhythm-Also in August San Javier holds many theater and musical events. Next we find in July the festival of the Virgin del Carmen, holding many street and boat processions. This festival is held on the 16th to the 25th and moves through Los Alcazares to Santiago de la Ribera and on to Lo Pagan, Cabo de Palos and then Cartagena.

In September and October you can find more festivities. For example, the re-enacting of the battle between the Carthaginians and Romans. Also September and in October sees the celebration of Autonomy for Los Alcazars which lasts a week and incorporates processions and fireworks and the competition to find the best "Caldero" which is a very tasty traditional rice dish. This dish is cooked in hanging cauldrons, of which are dotted around the beach.

December is also a busy month and starts with the Fiesta de San Francisco de San Javier. This fiesta involves sporting activities and musical concerts and leads us nicely on to Christmas which brings us to the 25th of December which is Christmas eve. On this day the Spanish have their big family dinner and maybe allow the children one of their many Christmas presents as they normally wait until the 6th of January, before they giving them their main presents.

Your stay here in Los Alcazares is sure to be enjoyable as you can choose from the many activities, whether you prefer something relaxing or more challenging. You will have great memories which most likely will make you think about returning again and again, like those of us who did and now have decided to live in this fantastic place.
